🤠 Wanted 🤠

Has anyone seen Rye’s Foster??? We know they’re out there but need your help to find them 🔎

Some positive feedback from her recent temp foster:
💭 “I had a very smart dog, but Rye is like Einstein.”

💭 “She is so lovely and gentle, but she really does want someone to be with her all of the time. She is sleeping behind me now in her bed as I work.”

💭 “I insisted our dogs take cookies etc gently as we had so many kids in and out, but Rye is even more gentle again. I only had to tell her once that she had to wait at the top of the stairs until I “released” her and she understood from then on in. She is a smart girl.”

Ideally Rye’s home looks like:
🏡 Time to be together - walks, sitting on the porch, watch TV, keeping you company while you work, playing, hiking - whatever you want to do Rye wants to do!
🏡 Only dog with no other pets or kids
🏡 Single or quiet households - Rye has a hard time sharing her humans

Temp-Fostering is short term like for a Long Term Foster’s travel. You ensure a pup doesn’t have to go to boarding, get a furry companion for the holiday, and make an impact on a tiny life!

💤 Lil Sleepy – This little girl is great with other dogs and kids. Lil Sleepy would love to be able to spend the holidays with you!

⛈️ Stormy - This little love bug would love to spend the holidays with you! Stormy is potty trained and fine with being left alone. She is good with kids and loves to go on walks. In the house she loves to snuggle but is also good at entertaining herself with stuffed toys.

🌹 Rosie – Rosie is a shy girl that needs time to get to know her humans. She would do best in a quieter neighborhood and home.

COVERED! 🤩 Spike - This senior citizen is known for his spiciness! While he wants your attention, if you pet him too long or surprise him, he will try to bite. Luckily he only has 3.5 teeth so no damages occur!

🥭 Mango - This energetic pup loves her humans, is potty trained, and crate trained. Mango does best as an only dog. She is really smart and sweet.

COVERED 🤩 Hera - This girl may be small but makes up for it in energy. Hera is the best of both worlds and is always ready to play but also enjoys snuggling with her person. Hera is crate trained and would love to show you her skills as well as continuing to learn new skills. Requires a house with no cats and would do best as an only dog.

Yesterday was our greatest Giving Tuesday yet with more than $2,000 raised from last year and nearly 10x greater than our first Giving Tuesday in 2023.

We are so lucky to have grown so much in just a short time but this wasn’t possible without some very important people that deserve special praise…

Why are we trying to extend, you ask? This year has been tough for every rescue organization, Laila's Legacy included. The layoffs & job losses in the DMV region along with economic instability across the nation has impacted many pet owners and animal lovers in the area. We along with shelters & rescues all over the region are seeing skyrocketing numbers of owner surrenders due to eviction or job loss and donors are more hesitant to sign up for monthly donations to focus on saving for emergencies. Combined with record low adoption and foster sign ups it makes it harder and harder to say, “yes” when we're asked to help!

We receive more shelter over-capacity pleas and owner surrender and support emails than ever. Giving Tuesday funding offers us the cushion to say “yes”. To say “yes” to saving lives from shelters, supporting our shelter partners, and supporting our community!

Mango is shocked no one has signed up to foster her for Thanksgiving yet 😮

Sweet Mango needs a temp foster for just a few days, the 11/25-12/1! This is a perfect opportunity for anyone staying in town or someone who normally can’t foster because of work to temp foster!

Mango needs to be the only pup in the home and a foster without kiddos but is a ball of love, loves to cuddle and play, and is potty and crate trained!

This amazing community stepped up and helped us find not one, but TWO fosters for Lil’ Lucy, can anyone step up for Mango so she has a soft place to land? Don’t we all deserve a home for the holidays? 🥺

Can only foster part of the dates? That’s ok! That’s still helpful! Let us know in advance and we can find coverage for the other dates.

Can’t foster or adopt! But can pet sit in the Foster’s home, that is an option for Mango too! 🏡

‼️Urgent - we need your help to save Keko and Cider‼️

Sadly we need your help fundraising for two very sick kittens.

Firstly — a kitten many of you know in need of help is Keko. Since his last appointment with Internal Medicine, he seemed to be at least comfortable for awhile but that is shifting for him and he’s in pain and needs our help. He suddenly took a turn over a two day period and required emergency surgery and a tail amputation - coating $1,600.

Our last fundraiser didn’t raise anything for Keko and we financed his entire Internal Medicine appointment without making up any of those funds in donations (let alone his many other primary care visits before that). For a small rescue with limited income from adoption fees (all of which goes back to the animals), we cannot continue to support pets like Keko who needs $1,000’s of dollars of work up without financial support. Our next steps would be yet another surgery if he doesn’t continue in the right direction. This may seem pessimistic but his vet is hopeful that we can turn a corner for him but we can’t do it without your support.

Secondly — Poor Cinder, the first pictured, suffered a URI at the shelter as a young kitten and as a very sudden and unexpected side effect his cornea is now ulcerated beyond repair and he will need his left eye enucleated. He is being medically managed on a strong cocktail of antibiotics, pain medications, and antivirals, however he is in pain and we need to get this eye out ASAP so we can focus on saving his other eye! Cinder’s surgery alone is $1,000!

We are asking for $3,500 to fundraise Keko’s original IM appointment, his recent surgery, and Cinder’s eye surgery.

If you’ve been following Keko’s journey, you know this sweet kitten has been through so much. As the last remaining kitten of his litter who has struggled with medical challenges, he’s no stranger to vet offices and testing. 😢

Yesterday we got news there was a cancellation with the Internal Medicine Specialist we were referred to - for today!! So today, Keko is going in to hopefully find some answers. Thus far, through two other veterinarians he’s been worked up for congenital abnormalities, had x-rays, fecals and deworming, and we’ve tried more medications and speciality food than a caption will let us list. His foster, @fullhouseandfosters has remained steadfast in caring for him, tracking every change, medical update, and diligently giving medications.

Yet answers have eluded us which is why we’re so eager to hear about his appointment today. ❤️‍🩹

A specialist appointment with internal medicine isn’t cheap. So far between multiple Parker & Ace appointments, more testing at VPP, medications, and speciality GI Food we’ve spent more than $1,000 on his care. Today’s appointment is expected to be close to $900, including the $200 deposit we already put down.

Look who busted out of boarding!!! 🥹🎉✨😭💜

We are so grateful to the foster who stepped up to foster Walnut! We’re starting with just a week for now, so everyone give Walnut all the good energy that she “woos” over her foster to keep her long term 😇 Regardless we’re so grateful for this foster stepping up!

We couldn’t do this without everyone supporting these pups - especially those going to walk them at boarding! The volunteers getting social media content and others sharing the videos out is what helped spark interest for this foster (and for us to share to fosters of Walnut’s sweet face). And thank you to the volunteers that donated chews and today drove her to her foster! As you can tell by the cheese on her face she’s incredible happy 🤩

We try our hardest to circulate these pups to every foster we have but ultimately, what’s needed most is a foster to step up. Someone willing to take a risk like others take a risk on dogs facing euthanasia in shelters. We need someone that will open their heart and home and say, “I’ll give this pup some love, I’ll foster.” Every rescue uses boarding, every rescue has times where they can’t find a foster, and every rescue - try as they might - can’t create a foster from thin air. We are at the mercy of those willing to step up for the pups and be in this with us. The community sharing the dogs, answering emails or pushing them out to their networks, and people stepping up for temp coverages to prevent fosters from getting burnt out is VITAL to the functioning of any rescue, Laila’s included. ❤️‍🩹

We are so grateful to the foster who stepped up to foster Walnut! We’re starting with just a week for now, so everyone give Walnut all the good energy that she “woos” over her foster to keep her long term 😇 Regardless we’re so grateful for this foster stepping up!

We couldn’t do this without everyone supporting these pups - especially those going to walk them at boarding! The volunteers getting social media content and others sharing the videos out is what helped spark interest for this foster (and for us to share to fosters of Walnut’s sweet face). And thank you to the volunteers that donated chews and today drove her to her foster! As you can tell by the cheese on her face she’s incredible happy 🤩

We try our hardest to circulate these pups to every foster we have but ultimately, what’s needed most is a foster to step up. Someone willing to take a risk like others take a risk on dogs facing euthanasia in shelters. We need someone that will open their heart and home and say, “I’ll give this pup some love, I’ll foster.” Every rescue uses boarding, every rescue has times where they can’t find a foster, and every rescue - try as they might - can’t create a foster from thin air. We are at the mercy of those willing to step up for the pups and be in this with us. The community sharing the dogs, answering emails or pushing them out to their networks, and people stepping up for temp coverages to prevent fosters from getting burnt out is VITAL to the functioning of any rescue, Laila’s included. ❤️‍🩹

Buster Update 🌈❤️‍🩹

A short note from our director on Buster:
“I am so sorry to share that Buster has Prostate Carcinoma.

Buster’s specialists - a team of neurologists, pathologists, and oncologists - believe he likely has had prostate cancer since he came into care on August 8th of 2024. However, it would have been in such a small or specific location in the prostate no doctor would have seen/known to test it when he had his first surgery in August ‘24. They further confirmed nothing caused this. Even if we *had* known he had cancer there would have been no way to know when or the rate in which it would metastasize.

Madison & I worked closely with our doctors, in hopes there was something we could do. But we now know he’s in extreme pain as the cancer has spread so far.

As such our board made the unanimous decision to compassionately euthanize. Our director and his foster will be taking him this evening where he will pass comfortably in a lap with lots of love after many treats and ice cream.

There are no words at the heartbreak of cancer robbing him of a full life and a forever home. But I hope you’ll find comfort that he’s been loved by our team, his fosters, and the absolutely massive network of “Buster Fans” that have fallen in love with him. And he has only known that love for the last year he’s been in our care.

When we have made these posts in the past, we make the photo black & white to try and signify their passing. But in Buster’s case, this photo of him under the rainbow and loving his life with his humans was how I thought he should be remembered.

We’ve been working SO hard to get all our dogs out of boarding. Thanks to this community’s help we’ve gotten two out. But we need your help to ensure all our pups find fosters!

We have so many dogs in need like…

💫 Bjorn, an 80 lbs handsome boy that needs some extra TLC but is super loving. He’s been in foster and would not do well in boarding!

✈️ Jet is a pocket sized block head who’s great with dogs and great in the home!

🥜 Walnut has been in boarding for much too long and needs OUT! She’s best as the only dog, is good in the crate & at home during work days with dog walkers. Plus she’s been through obedience & muzzle training!

🫶🏻 Buster is a big headed & low energy boy who has been getting so much love online but ZERO foster / adopter interest. He needs to be the only pet in the home but has lived with (and loves) kids and in multiple style homes!

🥭 Mango just busted out of boarding but this medium sized, energetic girl needs a temp foster to stay out! Great in the crate. She needs to be the only dog & makes up for it with lots of snuggles. She’s super smart and lovessss training!

☔️ Rayna is a stocky, playful pup living with dogs in a multi-generational home and loving it! She just needs temp foster!

🌹Rosie’s foster mom is deploying for two years and needs a new foster. As a shy pup, she will not handle boarding mentally. She needs a slow intro to humans but opens up quickly to be the goofy, well trained, happy pup we know! She’s lived in a foster since she was 12 weeks old so is comfortable in a home!

🦇Cody has big ol’ ears like a bat but he’s really just a good boy! Loves his humans, super smart, and been through many months of bi-weekly training and a full b+t! He’s used to a dog walker coming midday as well.

And the lair goes on of amazing dogs in need!

Keko: Keko has such a spunky personality for such a tiny being. She’s a big fan of her people and often spends time finding her way to them on the couch and snuggling up. She enjoys laying under the covers, with her humans, or with her foster siblings. If you’re looking for a spunky, playful friend who still enjoys nap time Keko is your perfect match!

Mimi: Out of all the foster kittens I’ve had, Mimi is by far the bravest. Mimi is a confident, curious, and playful little adventurer with a heart full of love and a motor-sized purr that kicks in the moment she’s snuggled up on your chest. Brave and bright, she loves to explore her surroundings and isn’t shy about making herself at home—especially if there are toys or cuddles involved!

Muna: Muna is a spunky girl who loves her humans and feline friends! She is always seen romping, playing, or cuddling up with the resident cats and kittens, when she’s not getting scratches from her foster parents. Muna is curious, adventurous, and loves to explore her space, taking the world in!

Charlotte & Walter: Charlotte and Walter are sweet and shy to warm up but are very loving and charming once given some time to decompress. They enjoy quietly taking in the world around them and would love to stick together in a quiet home!

Yes! Boarding is safe. They are loved and cared for by the boarding staff, and it’s safer to be there than a foster that cannot support them. But nothing compares to being in a loving foster home. Every rescue has boarding facilities because we have to have the backup in case of emergencies. But it is intended for short term stays. We never want a dog to be living their days in boarding!

Just because they are safe in boarding does not mean they deserve the love and care of a foster home any less.

Help Laila’s help Layla 🚨

Our poor sweet lady Layla has been through so much since she was rescued from the PG county shelter last year. We originally thought that she was pregnant! Thankfully she was not but has been through multiple surgeries for spay and mass removals and new ones keep popping up that we are testing and monitoring alongside her vet.

Now on top of everything, her housemate got spooked and gave her a good sized puncture on her back that had to be cleaned out and a drain placed in it. She will need a strong course of antibiotics and pain medications and a few follow up visit before she is fully healed. This bill (on top of many others for the animals in care) is a big one for a small rescue!
